Sara Conklin’s new works on paper series, “Random Thoughts”, came from a 1945 photograph of Conklin’s mother’s nursing class. Interestingly, the majority of the work was done pre-COVID. The imagery of the six smiling faces in their starched white uniforms and nursing caps evoked the feeling of the era where things were simple. Were these simpler times? No one in the picture seemed unhappy or doubting their job and role. The addition of the flying figures is meant to lighten the mood, but are they damned, dangerous or playful in their carefree flight. The viewer should draw their own conclusions as to the nurse’s and flying figure’s role; nurturer, protector or malevolent. Hopefully there is enough to create an energy and story for the viewer to observer and decide on their own.
